My newest Flash game has finally been finished! After about two months of working in my freetime, I'm proud to announce that my game made it just in time for JayIsGames.com's latest Casual Gameplay Design Competition.
This is easily my most complex game yet, involving dozens of characters & animations (including variations of recurring ones), four dynamically-layered songs, and multiple endings. I usually don't write anything down while I conjure up everything about my games. I've found that once something has been drawn or written, it has an associated visual and becomes much harder to evolve, toss out, or modify. However, I had way too many scenes this time around, and made a storyboard out of Post-Its on my mirror:
I purposely kept this image small since it's technically a spoiler of every single thing that happens in the game. The missing areas in the grid are where I had to cut scenes because of continuity and/or time constraints. That paper in the top-right was my schedule for the last three weeks of development, which has its own baby Post-Its for when I moved tasks around (and eventually I just stopped looking at it since I couldn't afford to waste time making time).
I did, however, release a few teaser shots in the last week, so here are the Post-Its that went along with them:
I think the Post-Its were more so to organize my thoughts and not necessarily to communicate the details of each scene. That would explain the scarcity of the title screen Post-It:
...This should make more sense once you play the game :]
I'm posting this a little before the competition goes live, but it's likely that by the time you read this, it will have started already [Edit - competition is live!]. So, here's the link!
My game is titled: ...But That Was [Yesterday]

And for any and all news regarding updates / changes / words of thanks for my game, be sure to keep an eye on my Twitter since I update it much more regularly than this blog. I plan to do some more making-of posts in the future, so come back soon!

Can't wait to play!
Excellent game !
I didn't know you were the one who made "How my grandfather...".
I think "...But That Was [Yesterday]" is your best game right now, really emotional, narrative and interesting to play with. Thanks a lot !
It's not often a game moves me to tears (in a good way!) but this really did! Awesome, awesome game!
Excellent game man!!! Just excellent.
Loved taking the journey. My 10 and 14 year old sons watched me play. It was a great experience for us all.
This is the most brilliant thing I've seen since Braid, probably. And I think might like this one better.
Your game is amazing! :)
We, the other contestants have no chance against your game T_T.
Oh well, its is a great game indeed, and I am happy I played it. Congratulations n_n
This game is just amazing, just like [Together], but better.
I wrote a review about it (and about [Together] too earlier). Unfortunately, it's in french, but maybe you can read it :

Nice game, very touching. I really love the OST.
Wow, just wow. I really enjoyed this. It is rare for any game to pull on the heart string quite like this, and you pulled it off perfectly.
Just played your game and I have to say it is *fantastic*! I almost teared up at the end (gf returning ending). You've done something quiet beautiful here. I am sure you've played Braid, and you easily have the same kind of quality of narrative/empathy.
Awsome game.
I liked it so much.
I really love your game. It really touched me.
Congratulations from Spain :)
Fist I'd like to say I think this game is great!
However I want to notify you of a bug, so anyone else reading this must consider this as a SPOILER. Also I'm not sure if this description is accurate for the path to every ending (I still need to find all endings)
After the 2nd swing that makes a 90 degree anti-clokwise turn (3rd swing in game) you find some darkness ahead of you. If you bump in to it several times first, and then look back, you can make the jump. But the camera won't folow you anymore. You can walk off screen on the right, and if you keep doing that you hear a 'respawn' sound. You can't get out of this, breaking the game.
I love the game's message! The power of now and life experience. My congratulations. The world need this games!!!!!
The game is just...guess I can't describe how it felt, just too emotional...thanks for that piece of art. I would like you to post the sountrack, that would be awsome.
Love your work man!
I would love to follow it and promote it with my friends...

Good day!
Beautiful.
i love this game :) really it was a good work
Well that's certainly the first time I've cried over a video game. :)
An absolute work of art you've got here!
The missing places inside grid are exactly where I experienced to reduce scenes due to the fact of continuity and time constraints.
I have played the online games especially the wow for a long time and I have some good suggestions for everyone to get the bestSell WOW Gold via more easy and safe ways, I also have the best advice for you of the WOW Gold Cheap, please don't hesitate !
I don't often comment on indie game blogs like this because it generally doesn't even occur to me to do that. Well, this time I actually came back just to look for a way to let you know that I enjoyed this game immensely.
I've played touching games before, but this is the second game ever to touch me this deeply just through its gameplay (the first one was Jason Rohrer's Passage so you're in good company there!). Such basic, minimalist interactions and visual and audio ques, and yet they tell the story in an incredibly powerful way - this is something that especially mainstream games still have a lot to learn about. As have I.
I hope I'll manage to find the inspiration (and skills) to do great stuff like this at some point too - I'm already working in the games industry full time, but I'd love to do stuff like this on my free time. So far I've failed to do that, but games like these all add a bit more motivation and inspiration to do that.
So, all in all, thank you for making this brilliant game and making it available online!
I think the Post-Its were more so to organize my thoughts and not necessarily to communicate the details of each scene. Buy League of Legends Account

Hello :) I just found your game and I am not even sure if you still read comments on an article this old, but I really wanted to write this comment and tell you how much I love this game. It is so powerful and amazing, you did a very good job there :)
Hope you are well, have a nice weekend :)
@cghfgdergthj He might still get E-mails for this post (as apparantly I do lol). In 2011 he announced he was moving away from this blog to his site http://www.onemrbean.com/ .
You can probably contact him there and let him know how you still appeciate this post. (He has a lot of social media buttons on the right sidebar.)
I still love this game and I agree this post is very neat.
(It might be the only reason I can think of for which I miss having Adobe Flash installed...)
Thank you for your informative post!!!
